YES! Finally someone else has picked up on this. I found it randomly about a month back when i was looking around for decent movies that had slipped under the mainstream radar and was stunned when i found that one with such an unreservedly awesome premise had been made. Its not bad either.
I acutally managed to see it at a cinema as I'd heard good things coming out of Europe about it via IO9, It's not Citizen Kane but who asked it to be, plus it's got the lovely Sophia Myles with red hair and a leather and chain mail get up. Woof
It's got everything I want in a movie [with the possible exception of a cyborg assault on Regency England fought off by musket-carrying fops who'd otherwise be fannying around with uptight chatterboxes in ballgowns].
A Viking-re-enactment colleague of mine said it was 2 hours he'll never get back again. Never mind the runes and the CGI monster - how does the story stand up, plot-wise and suspense-wise?
Plot wise , it's a 'very' loose retelling of the Grendel part of the Beowulf saga, throw in some male bonding, fighting, personal redemption and that's about it. Suspense wise, there are a few tense moments , but not overly so. I'd rate it better than The 13th Warrior, but it's no Gladiator, it passes the time well and you're not bored.
A Viking-re-enactment colleague of mine they can be a bit intense about their chosen subject, "It was not all raping & pillaging , today we're going to sit in dung and pickle herrings like real vikings would have done". Likewise I wouldn't discuss 'Armageddon' with someone from NASA.

PC, thanks for the low-down. Mrs NW's adamant we're doing to get the DVD despite m y pal - who was on Coast on the telly lastt night. I walk with the greats.
On a lighter note, 'Faintheart' looks to be a funny enough comedy about Viking re-enactors and is also out this month. Any film boasting the slogan 'A Zero Will Rise' has got to be worth a laugh.
Theolpogical point, just so you know: there is NOTHING; not in all the Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil, not since Ymir emerged from the ancient ice; and not after the approaching Ragnarok itself and the peace on Vidar's Plain, is better than the 13th Warrior. It just can't be done... ;-)
I missed a trick - I should have done "an invisible alien manhunter assault on Regency England fought off by musket-carrying fops," and recommended Pride and Predators to Sir Ridley (pinko dhimmi though he is.)
Mrs NW's adamant we're doing to get the DVD ah but North did you not know that all the ladies love a bit of James Caviezel and will even sit through Mel Gibsons shit fest The Passion for it.
Perhaps I mispoke about the 13th Warrior I've not seen it for a couple of months, I will pray to the All-Father for forgiveness and hope he doesn't send the Choosers of the Slain after me, see you on the whale-road.

It got a good review from 'SFX' magazine too. Must add it to my shopping list...

I think you should pitch this to Sir Ridley Scott

And after that immortal put -down, I hereby cease from trying to 'draw sounds' in fitting, and humbled, fashion...
Mr North do let me know your thoughts on said filim when viewed.
cheers
