Is It Time To Get Rid Of The 'Life Sentence'?

.
I mean the phrase not the sentence, because it is increasingly apparent that 'Life' does not actually mean 'you will go to prison for the rest of your life'.

Pair Jailed For Shop Trip Murder
A man and a teenager have been jailed for life for murdering a father-of-five as he walked home from a shop in Staffordshire.
That's good then, taken off the streets, will never be able to hurt anyone ever again.
Carl Keatley, 21, of Greencroft, must serve a minimum of 13 years and Jordan Carroll, 16, of Lichfield, was given a minimum of 11 years.
WTF!

How is that 'Life'? In the worst of all possible worlds (and I can see it happening) one will be only 34 when he gets out, the other 27 still a good way short of the three score years and ten. (and this is before the inevitable appeals)

When it comes to the taking of a life, I tend to go a bit Biblical (specifically Deuteronomy: Chapter 19 verses 19 to 21.)

Yes I know there are degrees, crimes of passion, accidents etc. that's why we have Manslaughter charges. But come on, they were convicted of Murder which is defined as "The unlawful killing of another human being with intent (or malice aforethought)"

The liberals will say "Oh but they will be 'On Licence' for the rest of their lives they can be called back to jail for the smallest infringement, well we've all seen how well that works out.
Mr Eccles' brother-in-law John Bayliss said the family felt "very disappointed" by the length of the sentences given.
Me, I'd be bloody furious.
"We were promised a life sentence. The only people receiving a life sentence are Michael's family."
Exactly.

EDIT: Inspector Gadget who is closer to the 'Front Line' than most, has a post on this type of sentencing and the message it sends Take A Deep Breath

  1. Your Biblical quote implies that you are in favour of the death penalty. I am shocked by this revelation - I thought you would have been anti-death penalty; happy to ask the question "What If He Didn't Do It?".

    Life meaning life? Yes. Abso-bleedin'-lutely

  2. Parky thanks for visiting.
Yes I am in favour of the death penalty for the most heinous of crimes where the evidence is incontrovertible.

    Monsters Amongst Us

However "What If He Didn't Do It?". If there is no 'smoking gun' or he/she was not found standing over the body knife in hand, if there is any 'reasonable doubt' by all means bang them up.
As long as 'Life' means life without possibility of parole.

And with a heavy sigh I read of another ‘Life’ sentence for beating a man to death with a hammer. In this case ‘Life’ is a minimum of 9 years and 2 months.

Me too. This would be one such case.
